Choosing An Appraiser

It may be difficult to find a qualified appraiser because the industry is not government or legally regulated. In evaluating appraisers, people should look at four major elements: education, experience, examination and ethics. The three major organizations that certify and qualify appraisers are: Appraisers Association of America, American Society of Appraisers and International Society of Appraisers.

Our lead expert at M&G Appraisals is accredited with the International Society of Appraisers and duly qualified in Canada and the United States.

The Process

At M&G Appraisals, each appraisal process begins with an on-site consultation. Since our appraisers are ‘generalists’, they are duly qualified to determine the value of most objects in the categories fine art, antiques and collectibles. Each item to be appraised is photographed, measured and analysed on-site. This information is taken back to the appraiser’s office and diligently researched in order to find the current market value (depending on purpose of appraisal) of each item.

Services/Fees

M&G Appraisals experts are “independent fee appraisers”: we have absolutely no vested interest in the items we appraise. Our professional fee for services rendered is never contingent upon our conclusion of value.

Our services include inventory appraisals which are recommended to indicate fair market value for estate planning, divorce, or liquidation purposes.

Our more comprehensive appaisal reports provide detailed information on each item including: history of artist/manufacturer, condition, age, provenance, size, etc., rendered as an Appraisal Certificate. Also included in the report is a legal cover document and the appraiser’s qualifications. Each report is written according to the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, and the International Society of Appraisers. These types of appraisals are recommended and even required by most insurance companies for valuable articles policies.
